Khwera Salt Mines Tour Overview
Khewra Salt Mine is the second-largest salt mine in the world and one of the oldest, with a history dating back to 326 B.C.
According to historical accounts, the discovery of the mine is linked to Alexander the Great during his campaign in the region. It is said that his army’s horses were found licking salty rocks near the Jhelum River, leading to the discovery of this vast salt reserve.
The mine stretches over approximately 300 kilometers, although only a small portion is open for visitors. It consists of multiple levels, with some above and others below ground. Tourists are allowed to explore selected areas while mining operations continue in other sections.
Inside the mine, the temperature remains naturally balanced—cool in summer and warm in winter—making it comfortable to visit year-round.
